Congratulations Future Mr & Mrs!
For newly engaged couples (like us, hi) wedding planning can be the most overwhelming and intimidating thing ever. From cake to invitations, wedding bands to entertainment, there are thousands of things to be decided upon. A wedding has become more than a wedding, it’s now an event. As exciting as the day is, it needs to be a representation of you and your partner. You are able to show your unique personality and everything that makes your union special. Long gone are the days of tradition and plated chicken and potatoes.
If you’re starting at square one (like us, hi again), and have no idea what you even want your wedding to look like, I’m rounding up all of the Upcoming Wedding Trends for 2019. Plus, at the end of the post, I’ll be sharing an awesome giveaway for brides to be from Toronto.
Themes
Just like every other major event or party, the best place to start planning is to decide on a theme. The theme you choose can be as simple as a color, red, or as complex as the scene from Alice and Wonderland where she is sitting at the table with the Mad Hatter drinking tea. It really can be anything! Having a theme gives the big day balance and sophistication. It helps create the story of you two and paint that into your guest’s mind. In terms of wedding planning, it helps keep you on track. You can always refer back to your theme and even let vendors in on it. It will help keep you on track of your vision and make the end result perfect!
Trending Wedding Themes for 2019:
- Boho
- Woodsy (rustic is out! Woodsy is in)
- Modern
- Glamour
Décor
The décor is what really makes your wedding theme known. Wedding décor relates to everything at you wedding that is an extra embellishment – flowers, name cards, chair covers, props, guest books. Décor can really elevate the entire mood of your wedding – it turns the day into a long-lasting memory. Décor can also be used as favors. In some weddings, the master of ceremonies can host a game for guests in which the centerpiece is gifted to one lucky person. Overall, décor is the final touch on the wedding day. It provides sophistication, elegance and turns a generic venue into a room to share the love.
Trending Wedding Decor for 2019:
- Balloons
- Natural Florals
- Lots and lots of greenery
- Untraditional venues
- Hoops and wreaths
- Geometric Shapes
- Marble
Fantasy FX
If you really want to create a memorable experience for your guests, the best way to do so is with visual effects. This is one of the most popular upcoming trends that will make your wedding unlike any other. There are so many fun options to choose from for lighting effects: falling snow, fireworks, names displayed on the dance floor, fireworks, bubble machines, color fog, sparklers. Audio and visual effects will enhance the theme and provide a wow factor for guests.

Another Level of Capturing the Moment
Welcome to 2019! Living in the modern world, we are open to so many technological advancements and opportunities. We have the ability to capture memories in a whole new way. You can literally get 360 views of your wedding, the reception, and each guest individual experience. This can start with the engagement party and last until the honeymoon. You can kindly inform guests to include your hashtag so that you can see each post too.
In terms of professional documentation, the popularity of drones is becoming more and more popular. One of my favorite drone captures is of the entire wedding, guests included. In addition, having a videographer that is quick to edit. One that captures those special moments throughout the day and then shares it at the reception. This gives your guest the feeling that they’ve shared the whole day with you. Photobooths are always fun too! They are one of the best favors in my opinion. If your budget is tight, a great DIY photo booth is to set up a cute backdrop with a few Fujifilm Instax cameras.
Trending Wedding Technology for 2019:
- Wedding hashtags
- Snapchat story frames
- Drones
- Photobooths
- Edited video to play at the reception
Ceremony
Is it the reason we’re all here today right? To see two people in love make an everlasting commitment to one another. A tradition that was started thousands of years ago, and therefore, is a bit dated. The ceremony has become more of a personalizable experience recently. Couples are able to include (and exclude) anything that doesn’t suit their personalities, customs, religion or traditions.
My BFF recently got married, and they added the cutest (to some) moment into their ceremony. So I have to say, they are beer drinkers who love their beer. They found this beautiful mahogany box, and inside each put a copy of their vows, they each wrote a letter to each other and then they had their officiant bless the box. On their 5 year wedding anniversary, they are to open the box and celebrate with the beers. If they happen to have a problem arise in the marriage before the 5 years, they are to open the box, drink their beers and read their letters to each other. Oh ya, they also put 4 beer cans from a 6 pack inside… and then as they were walking down the aisle, shotgunned the other 2 beers from the pack…
One of the most important wedding trends is the unplugged ceremony. At an unplugged ceremony, you simply as guests to leave their phones at the door (not literally) and support you during this special time. I mean, you’ve already paid a photographer thousands of dollars to get that perfect shot, so why does your auntie feel the need to snap a pic in the middle of your ‘I Do’s’ for her Facebook feed? Having an unplugged ceremony means fewer distractions and more love being shared.

Colors
The color of the year for 2018 was deep purple, a beautiful color! The predictions for 2019’s color of the year is also a deep and dark tone. The wedding color trend is moving away from the pinks and peaches and into the deep colors like navy blue, violet, black, and grey. Also, more futuristic ‘colors’ like chrome and silver are great secondary colors – and let’s not forget gold of course.
Trending Wedding Color Trends for 2019:
- Deep colors
- Shimmer and glitter
- Chrome
Food
The best part of any wedding! I’m a total foodie, so of course, I think the food is always the most important part of any event. What’s trending in food now is food that is not just a meal, but an experience. DIY stations are the most popular way to include guests in the making of the meal. Some of my favorites are S’mores Bar, Mashed Potato Bar, Poutine Bar, and the Sweets Bar. The sweets bar is usually an upgrade that can be made at most venues now! I’ve found it can range from about $200+ depending on guest size and location. If you are stumped on wedding guest favors, a take-home bag of sweets is always delicious!
We’re also moving away from the gigantic and usually wasted wedding cake. Instead, couples are opting for a funner cake like towers made from other desserts – macaroon, donuts, cake pops. Looking back, I don’t think I’ve ever tasted the wedding cake at any of the 6 weddings I’ve been to…

Attire
The wedding dress doesn’t even have to be just a dress anymore. Today’s bride is fashion forward and looking for more than a simple white gown. Frugal brides are looking for a dress with more uses than just the wedding day. There are bridal pantsuit options that are very classy and sophisticated. Dresses with pockets, because where else would the bride hold her lipstick? Brides who are looking to save that extra penny can even rent their dress. Which I think I just might do. I really have no idea what brides do with the dress after the wedding day…
Long live the poofy shmoofy bridesmaid dress that is hated from the moment the bride says “I’m the bride so you have to wear it”. One of the coolest dresses I’ve seen is the Henkaa – it can be worn over 25 different ways and looks beautiful on every bridesmaid. It looks beautiful to see the bridal party in their own styles in one color.
