How to Make a House a Home: Tips for Personalizing Your House

This post has been sponsored by SimplePrints, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

One of my favorite things to do is come back home. After a long day at work or after a family vacation, I love coming back home. For a while, I didn’t really feel like our home was ours. Which is a crazy thought considering how much I’ve invested into it! There’s a big difference between a house and a home because you can have any house, but only one home. Whether you’re moving into a new home or updating your space, we all want our home to feel cozy and welcoming.

My favorite ongoing project is turning my house into a home with décor. I love making our space feel more homie by introducing new pieces and changing the space a little every day. Here are a few of my tips for personalizing your home.

Tips for Personalizing Your House

Fill Your Home with Color

Use different objects, art, and photos to bring color to a blank space. I believe that all rooms should be painted an everlasting neutral, and then be spruced up with different colored décor!

For a while, I was decorating with a monochrome scheme. Everything was black and white and grey. For my Instagram life, it was perfect, but for our everyday life, it wasn’t. The monochrome scheme with very minimal décor made our house feel very cold and temporary. It started to feel like we were just living in a space that wasn’t really ours. When I started to bring in pieces with color, it really brightened up our lives.

Consider Everyone’s Personality

Your home is likely filled with more people than just yourself. It’s important to create a space that includes everyone’s design and style likes. For this reason, I suggest sticking to a neutral and natural décor color pallet. It’s more calming and inviting when there are fewer colors distracting in a room. While considering everyone I also like to touch on that note of inclusion for any displayed photos. Share photos that include the whole family – if you don’t have many great full family photos, then I suggest hanging a gallery wall, so everyone can be represented fairly. Check out my post on How to Create the Perfect Gallery Wall in Your Family Room.

Include Items that Evoke Memories

Over the years we collect different objects and photos from family trips, events, excursions and more. We mainly collect these things because they remind us of a time that we were really happy. Having décor around your home that connects to these memories can make a house really feel like home. It brings more of who you and your family are into a space and can make you feel more at ease.

I’ve updated our home with different prints and photo books from the SimplePrints app. SimplePrints is an app available on the app store for making photo memories come to life. They offer large and small Canvas Prints and photo books. I think photo books are perfect for coffee tables and

Variation of Décor

There are 3 things that should always vary when you’re creating your space – height, shape, and medium. Using different types of décor like shelving, framed pictures, canvas’, fabrics, and more elevate the space. There are a few different variation rules that you can follow:

  • Rule of thirds
  • Triangle decorating rule
  • Height variations

Where to Start When Decorating Your Home

I always like to start in the best room in the house – the bedroom. My bedroom is like my sanctuary where I can escape from reality. Decorating your bedroom is where you should stat when giving your house a homier feel. For bedrooms, there are a few different focal points when decorating:

  • Above the bed
  • Across from the bed
  • Under the window

When entering a bedroom, our eyes automatically go to the bed. We’ve lived in our home for about 3 years, and this space has always been empty. It took me forever to find the perfect piece to hang above our bed. I wanted to bring a balance of color, light, and memory. One of my favorite memories is being at the beach with my family. A few years ago, we were in Aruba for my birthday. We went to this secret beach with the warmest and brightest sand and the bluest water. We spent the day having fun, so I didn’t get to take any pictures. I found this art piece on Etsy, and I was immediately brought back to that moment.

Bringing that memory to life was easy using my SimplePrints app. I downloaded the electronic file to my phone, then uploaded it into the app. I was then able to see a complete 360-degree view of how my electronic file would look printed as a Canvas Print. I was able to select a quick delivery time right to my home. The print is high quality and perfectly wrapped to be posted above my bed.

I think that once you’ve designed your bedroom, you’ve set the tone for the whole house. You can bring elements from the most inviting space and incorporate them throughout your home to continue that cozy feel.

My Personal Decorating Secrets

I’ve always loved home décor and design – For a while, I wanted to be an interior designer. My personal interior design taste has changed a bit over the years. It’s gone from really girly to completely black and white, and now to more natural and bohemian.

  • Use the same filter or editing style on all hanging photos. It makes your entire home more cohesive and the décor seem more unified.
  • Keep your color palette to a minimal. Try and choose a few neutral colors with one or two major accents. In my home, I love blush, light browns, greys, and whites.
  • Don’t follow design trends. Instead, follow your own trends and moods.
  • Update your home constantly. We’re always making new memories and we should aim to keep our home as happy as possible.
