Setting Up the Perfect DIY Ice Cream Sundae Station

I Scream You Scream!

We headed over to my moms to celebrate Jaxxin’s 5 birthday with a fun sleepover party. I really wanted to make it special so I thought it was the perfect night for a DIY ice cream sundae station. All week they have been asking for iced cream so I finally let them have it. I picked up a few of our favorite toppings and ice cream flavors before getting into DIYing our sundae bar. Here are some of my tips for creating the Perfect DIY Ice Cream Sundae Station.

Tips for Setting Up the Perfect DIY Ice Cream Sundae Station

  • Use different textures (soft, crunchy, chewy)
  • Don’t forget some fruits (to make it kinda healthy)
  • Compliment the ice cream flavors (chocolate doesn’t always need more chocolate)
  • Add some color (sprinkles, cookies, fruits)
  • Sauces help bring a different flavor to the ice cream (try squeeze bottles for less mess)
  • Cut up or crush bigger treats (have a spoon to help sprinkle them)
  • Organize everything in a way that inspires and excites the DIYer 🙂

How I Set Up Our DIY Ice Cream Sundae Station

Step 1: Choose an ice cream flavor

The classics – vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry – are best because you can easily build from them by adding toppings.

Step 2: Pick LOTS of toppings

From fruits, cookies, to sweets and syrups, a little bit of everything helps the DIYer make their perfect ice cream sundae!

Step 3: Prepare the toppings

On various plates and dishes, layout all the toppings. Be sure to add spoons or tongs to each item to keep sticky fingers or different toppings from mixing together.

Step 4: Bring out the ice cream

Before everyone joins in, I like to scoop their ice cream for them. It keeps the process moving and makes everything much easier for the DIYer. I think 2 small scoops is the perfect amount.

Step 5: Sundae Time!

Let everyone do their own thing and DIY their sundaes.

My Favorites to Include in a Sundae Bar
  • Smucker’s Sundae Syrup
  • Aero Mini Chocolate Bars
  • Skor Bits
  • Sprinkles***
  • Pop-Tarts
  • Sugar Cones

*the kids used ALL the sprinkles so be sure to include sprinkles!

There is no right or wrong way to create a DIY ice cream sundae station. It’s all about having fun! I think that’s why I loved it so much. While it took a bit of work to get the whole station set up, I loved watching the kids get creative and be so excited to make their own dessert! I think the DIY ice cream sundae station is going to be a staple for every birthday party, family party, or a Friday night for that matter!

Food for thought: is it ICED cream or ICE cream…
