How to Fix Matted Fur Trim on a Winter Coat

So you just ruined your favorite jacket

You spilled your Starbucks on it and now it needs to be washed. Like me – you read the tag that said DO NOT dry clean, with a bunch of symbols beneath. So you thought sure, I’ll just throw it in the washing machine and it will come out brand new.

Wrong!

You take it out and your coat ends up looking a little like this:

Horrible!

The hot water melted the fur giving it a matted down clumpy look. Trust me – it is not pretty. I just bought this jacket before this winter and I can’t believe I just ruined it!

If you’re in the same position I was – do not panic, get angry or throw it in your donation pile. I’m going to show you simple steps that will bring your favorite coat back to life in 30 minutes for under $30!

Tools Needed to Fix Matted Fur Trim:

String

Buttons

New fur (I bought mine here)

Safety pins

Let’s get started!

*WHEN BUYING FUR:  ensure it is sized specially for coat hoods and will save you from cutting sizing and sewing your own button hooks*

Shopping for the Trim:

This link has every color imaginable for under $30!  Some samples below:

These are under $15 but only come in 3 colors:

This is real raccoon fur for under $30:

Step One:

Find the center of the fur. Attach the center to the hood with the safety pins. Make sure to get a fur with the button attachments like mine (this will save you the step of sewing on button hooks)

Step Two:

Attach the rest of the hook marks with safety pins. These attachments will help keep your fur in place and centered.

Step Three:

Sew on your buttons. Start with the center, and then move your way around the hood.

Step Four:

Attach the fur securely onto the hood with the buttons.

Voila! Your winter coat is now good as new (maybe even furrier than before). Next time you go to was your coat you will be able to remove the fur and keep your coat beautiful.
