7 Non-Coffee Starbucks Drinks + Why I Stopped Drinking Coffee

Starbucks, you are my weakness. I used to hate coffee, I would literally gag at the smell. But there’s some sort of law that when you become a mom, you have to drink it. After the sleepless nights with a tiny baby, you start to drink it as the way to make it through the day. That extra kick of espresso helps you fold that extra pile of laundry before going to yoga and then crashing in bed. But after a while, the coffee addict life starts to get dull, you feel like you need a change. I decided to ditch my coffee addiction one month ago today – and I couldn’t be happier! As a result, I’ve tried sooo many of the amazing non-coffee Starbucks Drinks (and saved myself a couple bucks).

7 Non-Coffee Starbucks Drinks:
  • Iced Matcha Latte (My Favorite! Mixed with almond milk + 4 pumps vanilla syrup)
  • Cinnamon Dolce Frappucino
  • Iced Passion Tea with Coconut Milk
  • Very Berry Hibiscus Refresher with Milk
  • Cupcake Creme Blended Frappucino
  • Iced Chai Latte with Cinnamon Dolce
  • Strawberry Banana Smoothie
Why I Stopped Drinking Coffee:

If you follow me on Instagram, you know about my past obsession with coffee. It was a serious NEED everyday for me to get my fix. I started to notice that some of my tendencies towards coffee, were the same tendencies an addict has towards drugs.

Here are a few that resonated with me + my addiction towards coffee:

  • Isolating/secretive about activities
  • Financial problems (e.g. always needing money)
  • Looking pale or undernourished
  • Irritability/Argumentative
  • Defensiveness
  • Blaming – Placing the blame for the behavior on someone else or some event
  • Loss of control over the amount and frequency of use
  • Craving and compulsive using

I was in a very bad place with my coffee addiction. I was rewarding everything I did with a trip to Starbucks. After a few months, the costs really started to add up. On average I was getting about 2 drinks a day, everyday for 3ish months… (2x$5 avg drink=Z, Z x 3 Months=too much money..). So, needless to say I was spending way more than necessary on coffee. Besides the costs, my skin was suffering. Because of all the caffeine I was breaking out all over my face and looking washed out. I was having the hardest time doing simple things – like getting out of bed in the morning. I was always feeling angry and grumpy, unless I had that drink in my hand. Overall, I was a stressed out compulsive mess.

About a month ago now, I decided to go cold turkey. Addictions of all types are hard to break – especially when you are completely cutting out the addictive element. The first week was extremely hard. Everyday my body was telling me, I need it, I need it. The second week was easier. I stayed away from places that served coffee, so I mainly stayed at home. By the third week I was like alright I can do it.

So, it’s been a month now since I’ve officially had a real coffee product. I have to say, I don’t even miss it. I’ve replaced my addiction with water and saving money. After doing some research online and in the stores, I found some delicious alternatives (listed above). I use these as actual treats, not the way to start my day. It’s not to say that drinking coffee or caffeine is bad for you, it’s just an addiction I’d rather not have.

The Difference Since I Stopped Drinking Coffee
  • I can wake up in the morning (yes, actually wake up and get out of bed happy)
  • My skin is clearing up
  • My wallet is fuller
  • I’m not dragging Logan around so I can get my fix
  • I’m doing better at the gym
  • My overall mood is better

I was in a similar situation, but also different. I just started work at a consulting firm after college and ended up with two trips to Starbucks simply because every other consultant was treating the client there (and therefore themselves because it was an expense if the client was involved) morning and 3pm. I just finished college and loved anything free! My body didn’t need it but it was there and free. Well I did that for about 9 months and felt like crap towards the end. Luckily my project wrapped and quitting wasn’t too hard because…well because I would then have to pay for it! Anyhoo, proud of you for hanging tough this past month and really inspiring others to do the same!
