No Bake Mama Lactation Energy Balls

Mamas, you know the struggle – caffeine is life. BUT you are only allow to have one cup per day or your babies go crazy! Catch 22 right? These lactation energy balls are the perfect treat. They give you that little boost, crush your sweet tooth craving, WHILE helping you make more milk! Oh, and they are so delicious (the first time I made them, I ate them all in one night – makers beware)

Approximate Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

1 cup quick rolled oats

1 tsp ground flax seed

1 1/2 tsp brewer’s yeast

1 tsp unsweetened coconut

1 tbsp honey

3 tbsp natural peanut butter

1 cup chocolate chips

*there is a bit of leeway with this recipe. If you don’t like peanut butter (or honey) as much you can use more honey (or peanut butter) OR substitute with dare I say Nutella…*

Guide:

Step 1:

Mix all dry ingredients, except for chocolate chips (oats, flax seed, brewer’s yeast).

Step 2:

Add in peanut butter and honey. Mix with a spoon or your hands.

Step 3:

The ‘dough’ should be thick. Add in chocolate chips (I like to use half milk chocolate and half dark chocolate – because dark chocolate = healthy).

Step 4:

Roll the ‘dough’ into balls. Place on a non-stick surface and refrigerate.

They can be eaten right away, but they taste better after being in the fridge for about an hour.

Keep stored in fridge.

Why Brewer’s Yeast?

Brewer’s yeast is believed to be a galactagogue. It’s a supplement that breastfeeding mothers use to support lactation and make more breast milk. If you take brewer’s yeast as a dietary supplement while you’re  breastfeeding, the protein, iron, and B vitamins may help to combat fatigue and fight off the baby blues. Plus, some research suggests that B vitamins and chromium can improve the symptoms of depression, so it may have a positive impact on your mood, too.

Why Flax Seed?

Flaxseed oil increases the ALA content of breastmilk, but does not increase the DHA content.
