New Moms Guide: 6 Month Milestones
New mom’s life is tough. There isn’t a guide to motherhood, but there should be, right? I’ve always valued the opinion of other moms and the guidance they are able to share. The Most Important 6 Month Milestones
Starting Solids
Starting to try real foods is one of the most exciting moments I’ve experienced as a mom – Especially is you’re going from exclusively nursing. At the 6 month mark, most children will already have expressed an interest in trying foods. Babies should be able to hold up their heads and sit up. Whether your baby has their first tooth coming in or not, all new foods should be introduced as purees or overcooked large pieces that mimic teething toys.
Some of the foods you can use for their first meal are:
- Apple
- Avocado
- Banana
- Pear
- Baby Cereal
- Rice
- Green Beans (**Frozen are great for teething too!)
- Butternut Squash
- Potato
- and more
The first solid food Logan tried was an avocado. I remember he hated the texture and kept spitting it out. The next day we tried small pieces of overcooked butternut squash which he loved.

In the Diaper? Sorry Moms
After starting solids please be prepared for the smelly changes your baby will start to experience. As their bodies start to develop and manage the new foods, sometimes the digestion might get a little tricky. After introducing new foods, diaper rashes are very common. Painful bowel movements and explosions leave bottoms irritated and in pain. Teething

Start Slow
Starting slowly with the introduction of new foods can help your baby’s body to adjust. If you notice that their digestion is completely out of whack, cut back on introducing new foods for a little while. For the first week or 2, it’s best to start with one or two simple foods like fruit or vegetable and baby cereal. Once they start to get accustomed to eating you can begin to introduce new foods.
Notice When Something’s Not Right
