Cute Donut Shaped Cookies with Royal Icing Recipe – Bake & Decorate

DONUT WORRY, THEY’RE COOKIES!

 

 

Yes, still donut obsessed over here. Cookies have always been my favorite thing to bake. After A LOT of trial and error, I finally got the recipe perfect for both the cookie and royal icing. Since I’m still new to baking, I wanted to start off with something cute, but also easy. Overall, these are probably the easiest to prepare, cut out, and also decorate! In this post, I’m sharing the perfect sugar cookie recipe, plus the easiest royal icing recipe. Royal icing can be a bit tricky, this recipe show you how to make both outlining royal icing, and easy filling royal icing!

 

 

 

 

 

Donut Shaped Sugar Cookie Recipe:

 

Ingredients:

  • 3.5 cups of All Purpose Flour
  • 1 cup of Chilled Butter
  • 1 cup of White Sugar
  • 2 White Eggs
  • 1 tsp of Salt
  • 2 tsp of Pure Vanilla Extract

 

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 350°
  • Start by combining butter and sugar in a mixer. Mix until creamed
  • Add eggs, salt and vanilla extract to the mixture
  • Using a sifter, slowly add in the flour cup by cup
  • Once the dough is thickening, you will have to add in the rest by hand
  • Lay flour on your counter top and place the dough ball on top
  • Roll out the dough with a rolling pin until you have an even dough sheet of about 1-1.5cm
  • Cut out the cookie shapes
  • Transfer onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper or greased with butter or Pam
  • Cool in the freezer for 5-10 minutes
  • Place immediately in the oven
  • Bake for 7-10 minutes – until lightly golden on edges
  • Cool for decoration
How to Make Donut Shaped Cookies:
  1. Either with a round cookie cutter or a drinking glass, start by making circular shapes in your dough.
  2. Once the circles are made, use a smaller cookie cutter – or a lid from a disposable water bottle to make the donut hole

 

Perfect Royal Icing Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 5 tbsp of Meringue Powder
  • 7 tbsp of Warm Water
  • 4 cups of Icing Sugar
  • Food coloring (optional colors)

 

Directions:

  1. In a bowl combine the meringue powder and warm water with a mixer
  2. Using a sifter, gradually add the icing sugar
  3. Mix until all ingredients are combined

 

*For outlining icing* 

Use less water for a stiffer icing that will hold its shape

*For filling icing*

Add 1-3 tbsp of extra warm water for an easier to spread consistency

 

 

 

How to Decorate Donut Shaped Cookies

Probably the easiest cookie to ever decorate! Even if you’re a newbie baker like me, you can decorate the cutest donut shaped cookie and they’ll look fresh from the bakery! Follow the cookie and icing recipe mentioned above for the perfect decorating cookie and perfect royal icing for decorating!

 

What You’ll Need:

  • Sugar Cookies
  • Royal Icing (in different colors)
  • Sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Start by outlining the outside of the cookie – wavy lines are best
  2. Outline the inside ‘donut hole’ of the cookie – again with the wavy line
  3. Use the filling icing to fill the donut cookie outline
  4. Lightly shake/rock the cookie so the icing settles flat
  5. Immediately sprinkle with sprinkles
